The characteristics of plexiglass:
① Highly transparent. Plexiglass is currently the most excellent polymer transparent material, with a light transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass. The tube of the sun lamp called the artificial little sun is made of quartz, because quartz can completely transmit ultraviolet rays. Ordinary glass can only transmit 0.6% of ultraviolet rays, but plexiglass can transmit 73%.
②High mechanical strength. The relative molecular weight of plexiglass is about 2 million. It is a long-chain polymer compound, and the chains that form the molecules are very soft. Therefore, the strength of plexiglass is relatively high, and its tensile and impact resistance are 7～higher than ordinary glass. 18 times. There is a kind of plexiglass that has been heated and stretched, in which the molecular chains are arranged in a very orderly manner, which significantly improves the toughness of the material. Use nails to penetrate this plexiglass, even if the nail penetrates, there will be no cracks on the plexiglass. This kind of plexiglass will not break into pieces after being penetrated by a bullet. Therefore, the stretched plexiglass can be used as bulletproof glass, and also as a cockpit cover on military aircraft.
③Light weight. The density of plexiglass is 1.18kg/dm3. The weight of a material of the same size is only half that of ordinary glass, and 43% of metallic aluminum (belonging to light metal).
④Easy to process. Plexiglass can not only be cut with a lathe and drilled with a drill, but also can be bonded into various shapes with acetone, chloroform, etc., and can also be processed into airplanes by blow molding, injection, extrusion and other plastic molding methods. Cockpit covers are as small as dentures and dental trays. Organic glass (polymethyl methacrylate)
It has a hard texture and can be heated and shaped. It has the advantages of thermal insulation and no influence on X-ray and MRI inspections, and has been widely used at home and abroad.
Its disadvantage is poor mechanical properties, mainly brittleness and poor impact resistance. When it is hit by a second accident, the organic glass is easy to break.
